Elmina

One of the oldest European settlements in sub-Saharan Africa. Elmina Castle, the Posuban shrines, and the colorful fishing harbor make this small town one of Ghana's most significant heritage destinations.

Elmina's castle predates Cape Coast by over a century, built by the Portuguese in 1482. The town itself is a living heritage — fishermen still launch wooden boats at dawn, and the Posuban shrines (ornate military company shrines) line the streets with stories.
