Accra
Ghana's capital is a city of contrasts — historic Jamestown meets the tech hubs of East Legon, Makola Market buzzes beside rooftop cocktail bars, and the Atlantic coastline stretches past fishing canoes and beach clubs. Accra is where modern Ghana lives, builds, and celebrates.
Best time: November to March (dry season) or December for Detty December
Getting there: Kotoka International Airport (ACC) — direct flights from New York, Atlanta, DC, London.
Local tip: Don't skip the street food. Waakye from a roadside stall at 7am is an Accra rite of passage.
Cape Coast
Cape Coast carries the weight of history and the beauty of the Ghanaian coast. Home to Cape Coast Castle — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the most visited heritage site in West Africa — it is essential for anyone connecting with the transatlantic slave trade history.
Best time: July to September (festival season) or November to March (dry)
Getting there: 3-hour drive from Accra. Private transport or shared trotro.
Local tip: Visit Elmina Castle in the morning when it's quiet. The emotional weight of the space deserves stillness.
Elmina
One of the oldest European settlements in sub-Saharan Africa. Elmina Castle, the Posuban shrines, and the colorful fishing harbor make it unforgettable. The town has a rhythm — fishermen mending nets, women carrying fresh catch, children playing on the beach.
Best time: Year-round. Bakatue Festival in July is spectacular.
Getting there: 15 minutes from Cape Coast by taxi.
Local tip: Watch the fishing boats come in at dawn. Buy fresh fish and have it grilled at the harbor.
Kumasi
The seat of the Ashanti Kingdom and the cultural capital of Ghana. Kumasi pulses with royal history, kente weaving traditions, the enormous Kejetia Market, and a deep sense of cultural pride that you feel the moment you arrive.
Best time: Year-round. The Akwasidae Festival (every 6 weeks) is unmissable.
Getting there: 5-hour drive from Accra, or 1-hour domestic flight.
Local tip: Ask to see a kente weaver at work in Bonwire village. The skill and patience will humble you.
Tamale & Northern Ghana
Northern Ghana offers a completely different Ghana — arid savannas, traditional mud-brick architecture, vibrant festivals, and a culture shaped by Islamic and indigenous traditions. Mole National Park provides Ghana's best wildlife safari.
Best time: November to March (dry season, best for Mole wildlife viewing)
Getting there: Domestic flight to Tamale (1 hour from Accra) or overnight bus.
Local tip: Stay at Mole National Park lodge and do an early morning walking safari. You'll see elephants.
Volta Region
Green mountains, dramatic waterfalls, and the welcoming Ewe culture define the Volta Region. Wli Falls — West Africa's tallest waterfall — is the centerpiece, but the real draw is the region's natural beauty and the pace of life.
Best time: June to September (waterfall peak) or November to February (dry hiking)
Getting there: 4-hour drive from Accra through beautiful landscape.
Local tip: The hike to Wli Falls upper tier is challenging but the view is life-changing.
